Day 19: Bald Mountain Shelter to Curley Maple Gap Shelter (21.1 miles)

Updated: May 10, 2019

May 31, 2004 - “Rain, rain on my face. Hasn’t stopped raining for days. My world is a flood. Slowly I become one with the mud…” What a storm last night. So glad I was in a shelter and not a tent which we almost did. The wind was so loud you couldn’t hear the thunder. The first 4 miles of the day were all in the mud, don’t know why I put on a clean pair of socks when I woke up. Once I got past the muddy part it was a nice day of hiking. I went 17 miles before taking a break, trying to get to town for a hot meal and a dry place. Then it was 4 miles up 1500 ft in elevation to the shelter for the night. I met 4 older people that started a month before me. Still need to eat dinner but had a big and late lunch of 1 hamburger, fries, 2 corndogs, 60oz of Sprite, and a pint of chocolate ice cream all for $5; what a meal.
