Day 53: South Lake Tahoe to Aloha Lake (8.4 miles - 1098.4)

Updated: May 26, 2019

June 29, 2016 - One of the best night sleeps I’ve had since I started my hike. I was coming off a 30 mile day and not much sleep the night before, plus I was in a bed.

I tried the sleep in but my internal clock woke me up at 5:45am but was able to go back to sleep until 7:30am, then I was wide awake so decided to start moving around.

Was finally able to pee this morning after drinking who knows how much water I drank last night, they kept filling up my water glass. I knew I got dehydrated yesterday but didn’t realize that bad.

Adam made me breakfast then dropped me off in town. Everything I needed was on that one corner, groceries, outfitter and post office.

I started at the post office to mail my snow gear home. Then went to buy supplies to get me the 3.5 days to Sierra City. Then across the street to McDonalds for some sausage biscuits. Then to the outfitter for new trekking poles and water filter bags.

Then I called Tammy who agreed to come pick me up and drive me back to Echo Summit to get back on trail. Adam and Tammy were just the best. It was so nice of them to let me stay with them. I could have stayed a lot longer because I really would have liked to see more of Tahoe, maybe another time.

Back at the trail I packed up all my food into my food sack, bought a little too much but better to have too much than not enough.

With only about 8.5 miles to go for the day I really took my time. It was only 2.5 miles to Echo Lake. I knew that there would be a store so when I got there I got some ice cream, a Dr Pepper and water. I needed the water because I forgot to backwash my filter last night and need clean water to do it.

After the store I started my hike around Echo Lake. Such an amazing lake up in the mountains and around the lake were these tiny wood cabins. Just about all of them were hidden in the trees so you really didn’t see them. I was kind of hoping that there would be someone on their deck and invite me to stay. I really loved all those cabins and wouldn’t mind living in that lake someday.

After going around Echo Lake I had an easy 3 mile uphill to Aloha Lake where I am camping for the night. I got here real early so was able to really enjoy the lake, even took a quick dip in the water. I even packed out a Dr. Pepper for drink and lucky for me I found a patch of snow so I set the drink in it to cool it down. There are a lot of bugs out by the lake but they are leaving me alone. I should get to see a good sunset tonight if I don’t fall asleep before.
