June 26, 2004 - 34 miles on the day. I had the best day of hiking yet. Blue skies, no rain, cool weather, flat ground, few hills; doesn’t get any better. I could have done more but didn’t leave camp until 8:30. I was hiking fast today. I did the first 13.5 miles in 3.5 hours. Saw lots of deer but still no bears. Everyone is seeing them but me. Bilbo saw 3 today. It’s not fair. Another full house at the shelter. Most of the people here are section hikers. There were a lot of people out here in SNP since it is a weekend. Hope to catch up with some northbound hikers. I’m in between the big groups right now. I should catch up to the next big group by Harper’s Ferry. I passed the 900 miles mark today, just 1274 to go.
