Day 4: Low Gap Shelter to Deep Gap Shelter (22.0 miles)
Updated: May 10, 2019
May 16, 2004 - I had another long day of hiking. I left Low Gap at 7:15 am and tried to make it to Tray Mt by the afternoon. I left Joe and his friends, seeing as they were heading into Helen for the night. Only 4 days in and they are staying in a motel. I had a good morning of hiking until I started climbing Rocky Mt. I heard thunder, so I knew I was going to have to get a move on to make it to Tray Mt. before the storm hit (I’m a little over 5 miles away at this point). So I begin to fly up Rocky Mt and down it (elev. 4017), then up Tray Mt (elev. 4430), I did those 5 miles under 2 hours. I got to the top of Tray Mt. just as the storm was hitting, lightening all around, had to sprint the last quarter of a mile to the shelter. I met up with Dan who I’ve shared a shelter with the past 2 nights and met Paul who’s from England. We all left Tray Mt. shelter after the storm passed and meet up again at Deep Gap shelter, giving me 22 miles for the day.
