Day 21: Roan High Knob Shelter to Moreland Gap Shelter (32.7 miles)
Updated: May 10, 2019
June 2, 2004 - The 2nd day of June was better than the 1st, clear sky and dry weather. Last night I met a hiker, Will, who has only been on the trail 2 weeks (averaging 30+ miles a day). I couldn’t believe it. I thought Joe and I were doing really well. Will is a college student at William and Mary and runs track for them (800m and 1500m). So he is in really good shape. He hopes to be done by August 15, approx 80 days on the trail. He did the PCT (all along the West Coast, 2700 miles) in 91 days. He is the first person I’ve come across that can keep up with me. But I could beat him up the hills. I’m still King of the Climbs. I saw some great views from Little and Big Hump Mountains. They were bald so it was very windy on the way up; had a hard time going up straight. After those climbs the trail was mostly flat ground, so I was able to get my biggest mile day of 32.7.
